Abstract

AbstractHigher education students world reflects a life emphasizing academic morals.Unfortunately, there have been a lot of student fights triggered by trivial matters. This indicates a crisis in academic morals and stains campuses as centers foracademic life. If students as the intellectual young generation were continuouslyinvolved the culture of fight, the nation would be in danger. Therefore, it isnecessary to find a solution that can make use of students excessive energy todevelop their creative potentials and imaginations through academic activities tomake them mature and skillful. It is the responsibility of a higher educationinstitution to develop students potentials so that they can give positivecontributions to society through their activities. The Yogyakarta State Universityhas made a breakthrough by including Physical Education (PE) in the 2009Curriculum. It is an initial step to equip students with both hard skills and softskills. PE makes use of physical activities in an attempt to attain educational goals.PE provides students with essential values that they can utilize in their campus andsocial life. In this way, students will possess mental toughness necessary to live thecompetitive life at present. Keywords: Physical Education, essential values

Abstract

AbstractIn the era of Competency-Based Curriculum/School-Based Curriculum, theassessment emphasizes students performance in each subject. They are required toacquire not only the cognitive aspect but also the performance aspect. Oneassessment model relevant to this is the authentic assessment. Such an assessmentemphasizes students ability to meaningfully demonstrate the knowledge theyhave acquired. The assessment not only asks questions about the knowledge theyhave acquired, but also requires the actual performance relevant to the knowledge. There are some differences between a traditional assessment and an authenticassessment. The former emphasizes the elicitation of knowledge the students haveacquired through objective tests, while the latter emphasizes the tasks that makethe students practice meaningfully learning outcomes in real life, reflecting themastery of knowledge and skills in a particular subject. The necessary steps todevelop an authentic assessment include (1) setting the standard; (2) assigningauthentic tasks; (3) selecting the criteria; and (4) designing the rubric. One popularauthentic assessment at present is the portfolio assessment model. This model is aclass-based assessment conducted during the learning process. A portfolio is acollection of students works systematically arranged during a certain learningperiod, used to monitor the development of the students knowledge, skills, andattitudes in a particular subject. Keywords: authentic assessment, traditional assessment, portfolio

Abstract

AbstractIndonesian Government, putting into action the Educational System Law, isstarting its efforts this year to develop schools to reach international standardschools (SBI). The Educational System Law (2003), specifically act number 20, statesthat The government and/or district develop at least one school in every level tobe promoted into an international standard school (SBI). That act arises manyquestions in the school level concerning the international standards school (SBI),such as what is SBI, what is the main goal, what is the requirement of schools to bepromoted as SBI, how can schools develop themselves to reach SBI, what is thecriterion of the success? Indeed, there are many ways for schools to developthemselves into an international level. Every school may use a different way thatsuitable to the schools condition. This paper brings to mind the LearningOrganization (LO) as one of the generic promising ways to develop a school into aninternational level. LO is basically an organization that learns and doescontinuously improvement. LO comprises of five major components: (1) sharedvision, (2) system thinking, (3) personal mastery, (4) mental models, and (5) teamlearning. Besides, there are five subsystems where those components should bedeveloped in LO: (1) learning, (2) knowledge, (3) technology, (4) people, dan (5)organization.Keywords: SBI, organisasi belajar, learning organization

The measurement of the service quality is an importantelement to provide better, more efficient and more effective services. This studyaims to investigate: (1) determinant factors of the students satisfaction of theservices in FMIPA Universitas Udayana; and (2) the dominant factor and itscharacteristics. The data were collected through a questionnaire administered to160 students of FMIPA Universitas Udayana to investigate their perceptions of thefacultys services. The data were analyzed using the descriptive technique and theconfirmatory factor analysis. The results show that, by percentage, no indicator isin the very good category, only one indicator is in the good category, 9 indicatorsare in the fairly good category, and 14 indicators are in the poor category. Theresults indicate that the facultys service quality needs improving. The results of thefactor analysis show that five determinant factors of the students satisfactioninclude tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. By thepriority scale, the reliability factor should be improved first because it is dominantin determining the students satisfaction. Quality indicators constituting thereliability factor include (1) staffs/employees professionalism; (2) employeessociability; (3) comfortable services; (4) staffs politeness; (5) clarity of theinformation given by the staff; and (6) accuracy of the grades in grade cards. Keywords: quality of service, descriptive technique, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to investigate (1) whether the problem-based learning (PBL)method is effective to teach a theoretical subject, namely Personality Psychology I,and (2) how effective the PBL is in comparison with the traditional one. This studywas a quasi-experimental study in which two Personality Psychology I classes(Classes A and C) employed the PBL method in the learning process, and the otherclass (Class B) employed the traditional method. The effectiveness was measuredby the outcome-oriented assessment through an achievement test and the processorientedassessment through a learning satisfaction scale and the amount of worktime in groups. The hypothesis was tested by the independent sample t-test. Thestudy shows the following results. (1) There is no significant difference in the scoreof the achievement test between the students in the PBL class and those in thetraditional class. (2) In the process-oriented assessment, there are significantdifferences between the students in the PBL class and those in the traditional class, especially in the learning pleasure, learning difficulties, learning anxiety, perception of the subject matter mastery, and perception of fairness. Keywords: problem-based learning (PBL), traditional learning, outcome-orientedassessment, process-oriented assessment

Abstract

AbstractThe school-based curriculum gives teachers freedom to design and develop alllearning activities for students by themselves, so it is expected that the teacherscompetence can be improved optimally. Besides, teachers creativity andinnovation can be developed to increase their professionalism. But, the fact showsthat the teachers responsibility is so heavy that they do not have enough time todevelop their professionalism. Almost all SMPs/MTss and SMAs/MAs inIndonesia assign teachers some duties based on classes. One of the ways toimprove teachers mastery can be done by taking specialization in teachingmaterials. This method gives some advantages to teachers and students as well. Forthe teachers, specialization in teaching materials can make them: (1) concentrate onthe teaching material development; (2) plan learning strategies effectively; (3) lookfor references easily and attentively; (4) write summaries and modules; (5) selectseminars and workshops to attend; and (6) direct students based on their ability. For the students, specialization in teaching materials can make them: (1) get theunity of concepts from the same teacher; (2) avoid needless character adaptationfrom different teachers; (3) detect self-ability; (4) look for references easily; and (5)avoid from learning over-lapping concepts. It seems difficult to implementspecialization for teaching material, but by having a good intention to increaselearning quality in Indonesia, all difficulties and obstacles can be handled. Patienceand seriousness are really needed to start a new thing. Whatever the result is, thiseffort should be made. Keywords : specialization, effort, professionalism, teacher
